Who we are
EkDoTeen is a Hindi learning app at app.ekdoteen.com, together with this website and its blog. EkDoTeen ("we", "us") is responsible for your personal data as described here.
Questions about this policy or your data: support@ekdoteen.com.
The short version
- You can read this website and use the app without an account. In the app, your progress then stays in your browser.
- With an account, we store your email address and your learning progress so it follows you across devices.
- We don't sell your data, show ads or use advertising trackers. Neither the app nor this website sets cookies for visitors.
- You can delete your account and everything stored with it at any time, from Settings. See Delete your account.
If you use the app without an account
Your progress, your settings and your answers to the welcome questions are saved in your browser's local storage on your device. They are not sent to us. Clearing your browser data, or choosing Reset all progress in Settings, removes them.
If you create an account
| What we store | Why | Legal basis |
|---|---|---|
| Your email address, and your password as a secure hash (never in readable form) | To create your account, sign you in, confirm your address and send password-reset emails | Providing the service you signed up for |
| Your learning progress: completed lessons, quiz scores, XP, streaks, saved words, words and verbs you found hard, and your settings | To keep your progress in sync across your devices | Providing the service you signed up for |
| Your answers to the welcome questions: the name you want us to use, why you're learning Hindi, your level and your daily goal | To personalise the app | Providing the service you signed up for |
| Sign-in records kept by our authentication provider: time, IP address and browser | To keep accounts secure and investigate abuse | Our legitimate interest in security |
One of the reasons you can pick in the welcome questions is "Spiritual journey or pilgrimage", which may say something about your beliefs. Picking it is entirely up to you; the other options work just the same. If you pick it, we store it with your consent, only to personalise the app, and you can withdraw that consent by deleting your account or contacting us.
Whether or not you have an account
| What is collected | Why | Legal basis |
|---|---|---|
| Error reports when something breaks in the app: the error, the page, browser and device details, an anonymous account number if you're signed in (never your email address), and a short recording of the screen just before the error in which all text is hidden and images are blocked | To find and fix bugs | Our legitimate interest in a working app |
| Server logs kept by our hosting provider: IP address, the page requested and browser. Links from this website to the app carry a label naming the button that was clicked (for example "home-hero"), which appears in these logs and says nothing about who you are | To deliver the app and the website and protect them from attacks | Our legitimate interest in security |
| Anything you write in the app's feedback form | To read and act on your feedback | Your consent, given when you send the form |
If you write for our blog
People who write and edit the blog sign in to our content management system with their name, email address and a password, stored as a secure hash in our database in Frankfurt. A sign-in cookie keeps them signed in; it is only set for editors who sign in. Authors' names, and a short bio and photo if they provide them, are published with their articles.
Who handles your data for us
Your account, your progress and the blog are stored in the European Union. We use these providers, each bound to protect the data and use it only to provide their service to us:
| Provider | What they do for EkDoTeen | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Accounts, sign-in, and the database that stores progress and the blog | Data stored in Frankfurt, Germany |
| Our hosting provider | Hosting the app, this website, the blog's editing tool and blog images | Servers in Ireland (European Union); pages and images reach you through a network of servers close to where you are |
| Sentry | Error reports from the app | Data stored in Germany (Sentry's European Union region); Functional Software, Inc. (Sentry) is based in the United States |
| Our email delivery provider | Sending sign-up confirmation and password-reset emails | Servers in Ireland (European Union) |
| Tally | The app's feedback form | Tally BV is based in Belgium |
| Google Fonts | Delivering the app's typefaces. Your browser requests them from Google, which receives your IP address. This website serves its fonts itself and makes no request to Google | Google LLC is based in the United States |
Where a provider processes personal data outside the European Economic Area, it does so under safeguards recognised by EU law, such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses.
Cookies and what we keep in your browser
Neither the app nor this website sets cookies for visitors. The app uses your browser's local storage for your progress and settings, your colour theme, and, if you're signed in, your sign-in session. The app's error-reporting tool keeps a temporary identifier in session storage, which is cleared when you close the tab.
When you open the app's feedback form, Tally's own code loads and may store data in your browser as described in Tally's privacy policy.
The buttons in the app and on this website use the speech voices built into your browser or device. Some browsers send the phrase being read aloud to their own speech service. The phrase is lesson text, never information about you.
How long we keep it
- Account data and progress: for as long as you have an account. When you delete your account, your account and progress are removed from our database straight away.
- Sign-in records, server logs, error reports and email delivery logs: for a limited period set by each provider, after which they are deleted automatically.
- Feedback: until we have dealt with it. Ask us and we will delete it sooner.
- Blog editor accounts: until the editor stops writing for us and their access is removed.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, and in particular if you are in the European Union, the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, you have the right to:
- see the personal data we hold about you and get a copy of it;
- correct it (you can change your name in Settings; for anything else, contact us);
- delete it: use Delete my account in Settings, or contact us (see Delete your account);
- take it with you in a machine-readable format;
- object to processing based on our legitimate interests;
- withdraw consent where we rely on it, without affecting what we did before;
- complain to the data protection authority where you live or work.
We reply to requests within one month.
Children
EkDoTeen is not meant for children under 13. If you are under 16, or under the age at which you can consent to online services where you live, ask a parent or guardian before creating an account. If you believe a child has created an account without that permission, contact us and we will delete it.
Security
Passwords are stored only as secure hashes. Every connection is encrypted, including the connections to our database. The database itself makes sure each account can read and change only its own progress, and the blog runs under a separate database user that cannot reach learners' data. Links in sign-up and password-reset emails work only in the browser that asked for them. No system is perfectly secure; if a breach affects your data, we will tell you as the law requires.
Changes to this policy
When we change this policy we update the date at the top. If a change is significant, we will also tell account holders in the app or by email.
